Anyone who considered himself an officer and a gentleman expected total comfort ‘under canvas’. How could a chap hope to compose letters without a desk, play chess without a game table or store his clothes without a chest of drawers? The solution was to equip himself with a decent suite of ‘campaign furniture.’ Often decorative enough to grace the finest drawing room, campaign furnishings were designed to be easy to transport and assemble. Ideal for the military officer on the move. sturdy and perfectly finished faux-leather covered writing area. shelves for storage. solid brass hardware. easy to transport.

Captain’s Desk, Ivory

Captains made good use of notoriously cramped quarters in the ship’s stern section (deckhands were housed before the mast). The captain’s desk was tailor made to offer maximum comfort and space in a minimal floor area. Drawers to house the crew’s papers, sealed sailing instructions, logbooks, charts, instruments and a pair of flintlock pistols. Brass corners to protect from damage when being moved around. Sturdy construction to withstand often violent ship’s movements. Well-traveled. Sturdily made of cherry and combination hardwood. Faux Leather inset top. hand built from cherry and combination hardwood. solid brass hardware. use pre-printed cards or write your own...

Its shape goes back a hundred years; its mystique is that of early 1900’s offices and bureaux d’état… The still hand made precursor of the wheeled steel contraption known from movies inspired by the 1930s NYPD. Never surpassed in versatility. It will survive a student’s dorm room. It will faithfully and decorously serve as dining chair. It will fill a corner and captivate the connoisseur of true heritage

On the old Queen Juliana ferry boat from Harwich to Hook van Holland, traditional 1920s luxury still trumped 60s economy, which was evident both at a luxurious restaurant and in the office of the purser. The man himself, gently smiling like an urbane Dutch bishop, was seated behind a monstrous desk. At his back showed an equally large cabinet made up of spaces to hold keys, mail, fresh newspapers, menus, and the occasional telegram brought in by a messenger boy from the vessel’s radio room. Before retiring to our 2-berth luxury cabin (having consumed delicious entrecôtes and a fragrant Beaujolais-Villages) we checked out the purser’s cabinet again, which had definitely taken our fancy! Three wonderful bookcases for storing novels? Hats and hand bags? Gloves and travel gear? Newspapers and keys? Your choice. And with three configurations at hand, one will make the fit!
